I don't think the Wizard has bays available to rent because of all of Hoovie's projects, plus the yacht... Anyway, I'm a big Synology fan, installed a couple of their midrange NAS devices and they are pretty bulletproof. If memory serves, one of them got killed due to a power surge, and I just popped the drives into a new one, set up the software, and everything worked out of the box.

I regulalrly watch your channel, hadn't pegged you for a computer guy, but I really don't know why not. Cool setup you got there. I recently saved an old IBM server with about 20 TB's, more than enough for what I need. Was able to bump it up to Windows 10 without a problem. Cool, BIG ASS unit to mess with. Upgradable to 2 seperate CPU's and like 12 slots for ram. It's a monster, and needs TWO power cords on the back. (Though it will run on just one. Has two slot-style 750 watt PSU's)

dude.. why unraid? Proxmox with all the zfs goodness (including snapshotting) then an lxc of a linux of your choice on top of that running samba/nfs/whatever network sharing you want. This will also give you total flexibility to run whatever else you want on the spare cpu cycles on that machine (for example docker so you can run crashplan and back your 70TB up to crashplan for not very much money a month). It will also let you use sanoid for effortless rolling snapshots and syncoid for effortless and super fast zfs snapshot backups to another zfs box.
blarg3 ամիս առաջ
dude.. if you're going to mirror this setup then definitely go proxmox with ZFS. ZFS and sanoid/syncoid are basically the best way to do backup on a local lan and you can go raidz with as many parity drives as you want (I run 2 on mine, but you can have a half parity drive raidz if you want, or go with a pool of mirrored disks for statistically superior drive failure protection, super fast data read and write and easy expansion)

What about AWS? Having it local is the best, but what if you archived your old stuff on AWS and used the 12tb for weekly stuff? Did you do a cost comparison? I realize uploading 12tb of content would take...forever, depending on your internet connection. What kind of bandwidth do you get there? For how much? Upload speeds typically suck, but I have to think there are ways around it if you needed 200mb/sec + upload for a season. Does Tyler have anything like this? Or is he working with a vendor? Do I I have more questions that won't be answered? Yes.

@Tony well that changes year to year usually but none of them have the reliability IBM drives used to have a few years back. WWD used to be a good secondary choice but i've had all of them miserably let me down in the last few years. that wasn't just a statement i made to have something to say. none of the spinning drives are what i consider reliable any more. i like solid state drives too but even those have a limited shelf life
Tony2 ամիս առաջ
I disagree. I built servers for a living for the last 20 years. Reliability has not changed. We buy mostly WD/HGST because they are cheaper than Seagate.

Replay crew! I have a pretty simple network through AT&T Enterprise. Redundant fiber lines, to AT&Ts router, to my personal router, then Wi-Fi to my editing rig. I never save footage. Since AM-posts will allow me to download my videos (only at 720p but I upscale to 1080) I use their infrastructure to house all of my content. Love Linus TT, but I haven't watched in a long time. I moved from a life-long PC builder to Mac when I started seeing major issues in Adobe Pr not utilizing all of my CPU cores, and GPUs on my monster PC build. FCPX will edit, render, and process 10x faster than my PC build could with far less hangs. Granted my iMac was $6K, but hard to put a price on reliability and performance. Cool to see you building a monster storage array, very cool video!!

Noice. AT&T fiber here as well, but I have the plebian 350 synchronous because gotta pinch pennies where I can. Editing rig hardwired gigabit. All footage saved, but to used cheap hard drives because I don't *really* care that much. Currently using Premiere CC but, dear lord, what a buggy inefficient pile of garbage. FCPX seems absolutely ideal but, yeah, like ya said, $6k for a new mac that will handle 4k. Or $1400 for a used mac equivalent to my current PC that will handle 4k. Oof.
