My $500 Porsche 944 BLEW UP *Here's What Happened*

I took the $500 1987 Porsche 944 out for a rip and to make a video with @Velocity Garage ... then it started to overheat. So I trailed it back to the house and parked it outside so it could think about what it did wrong. Now that it's been a few months it's time to sort this car out again. I have an idea of what went wrong, but instead of just fixing that, we're going deep and changing basically all the common failure parts on the car. Unfortunately, it's literally days of work if you don't pull the engine.

This car sounds more and more like it wants an LFX swap. I think it would make for a major reduction in reliability issues and cost down the road with little if any weight penalty. You are already familiar with the torque and hp output of the LFX. It would make it an even more fun to drive car.

Yes , he's right, the coolant into the oil problem, bad design flaw, I had 2 944s that I needed to fix, but the 85.5 Porsche had said they fixed the issue..I can work on any 944 from 82-85, and 911 83-89 air-cooled engines, but I've never heard of this problem in an 85.5 engine.

You spent all that money and time on superficial stuff, but you didn't do the timing and balance shaft belts + rollers...and all the collars and seals? You also should've done the oil cooler gasket and seals...which I have a feeling you're about to mention.

The only way to fix those Porsche 944s is to put a high performance GM LS or LT V8 with the GM adapter kit. Trust me you'll love it!

Sounds like the 1987 nightmare I once owned, Porsche rebuilt that engine 2 times, after 2nd rebuild went directly to auction, your problem may never go away, but another engine. Now we know why it went to die out in that field.

While you have the intake off, replace the speed and reference sensors. 200x easier and a good no-start preventative if you haven't already.

My 944 had a severely warped head. PO put a new head gasket in it and it didn't help. Ended up having the block decked and bought a re-maned head for it and installed new ARP pre streched head studs.

Definitely oil cooler. Both internal and external seals have failed. That is where a lot of your oil leak is coming from. Your motor mounts are also shot. That's why you had a hard time removing the manifolds. Easiest way to change all of that is from above. Use an engine support bar or a board the size of the oil pan and floor jack. Remove the water tube by the headers, then unbolt the exhaust. 17MM ratchet wrench will slip between the control arm bushing to release the lower motor mount nut. With engine supported, unbolt the entire motor mount brace and remove everything at once. Drop the new motor mount into the cross brace, then install the support onto the mount. Bolt it all back up and done. Remove oil cooler while headers are still out, clean it all up, reseal and reassemble with alignment tool. Make sure to flush the system really well with cleaner to get all the oil out. Driver side motor mount is even easier from above. Just remove the air box while the engine is still suported, unbolt the entire motor mount assembly and replace just the same as passenger side. More room over there. These cars are incredibly fun to drive and not very hard to work on and maintain.

I was pretty sure before, but JR convinced me that I made the right decision in getting an MGB for a retirement project rather than a Porsche. German over-engineering--sheesh! I could rebuild my entire car with less effort. BTW, is it just me, or does it seem that that whole job would've been easier if you had just pulled the entire engine, and done all the work on a stand?

I did the timing belt on mine twice because I was missing a bolt. Based on the urging of a coworker I pulled the camshaft assembly back off and and the missing bolt was inside.

I'm gonna guess both the head gasket and oil cooler are leaking. It started out as just the head gasket, but the added pressure to the coolant system due to the combustion gases...blew the oil cooler seals. Necessary maintenance on these at this age. While you are at it, reseal the balance shaft cover on that side, as the o-ring on that will leak due to shrinkage. It will take about 5 flushes to get it clean, then reward yourself with a new coolant tank, that will crack eventually based on the color and looks of it.

@WATCHJRGO You will need a special tool to lock the flywheel so you can remove the crank bolt. also if you are going that far into the motor do a balance shaft belt and all the idler pullies, not to forget the water pump. upgrade the pump to the turbo water pump for more flow. replace all the seals on the front of the motor. oh and have fun with the bolt that holds the cam gear onto the shaft. use a little bit of heat to release the beast. Make sure you have a good new set of 12 point metric bits. BTW you are going to need a special tool for the gears on the balance shafts, I use to do 5 or 6 timing belts a week on these cars. over tighten the belt and the scream too loose they go boom. Use the special tools.

Non-Porsche mechanic here, just an 85 944 owner/enthusiast...another source of that glorious sludge comes from the power steering reservoir located high and proud and in the way. It's about $22 from FCP Euro but it has a built in filter, is easy to swap and bleed out and will eliminate at least one source of the schmutz caking up on the underbelly of the 944. Also I'll be the next fella to remind you that thermostat replacement is engineered by Satan's helpers but phosphate free coolant is the send off on this journey. Cheers!

Phew.. never went through the trouble of removing a head, even if it didn't blow the gasket, without having a machine shop shaving it 1st before re-assembling it.. especially with dropping only a cup of antifreeze when draining the cooling system. You're too young to remember the double Fel Pro head gaskets theory for the 1971 Chevrolet Vega.

Its an oil intercooler that it's water cooled, that tends to blow in this cars, when I had mine, the mechanic override the intercooler with a tubing kit

That is a sobering amount of time and effort to spend on a 33 year-old, high mileage 944 with an automatic transmission. Not many people would bother on a car that is not particularly valuable or rare. But it is fun to watch!

JR, please be careful when working under the vehicle on just the Quickjack's lifts. As it suggests in the operator instructions for all modes of the Quickjack lift's "Do not work under an elevated Vehicle unless properly rated Vehicle Jack Stands are used and placed under the factory-approved Lifting Points". Remember safety first. And thanks for all the really great videos.

Replace the oil filter with one from K&N. It has a one inch nut on the top making removal with a socket easy. My 968 uses part number HP-4001, yours should as well. K&N HP-4001 Performance Gold Oil Filter Fits 83-95 Porsche 911/924/944/968

Remember to check the oil cooler if it's with a water heat exchanger. They tend to rot and mix oil and coolant.

Oil cooler is likely the fix to your problem. I’d skip the head gasket and spend that time replacing those fuel lines. Way more 944s have died due to that terrible design than have been killed by bad head gaskets.

Also, go ahead and pull the fans and radiator out. Will take you like 30 more minutes and will make your life way easier doing the belts, and you can flush that radiator well.

Don't overcomplicate this job. As others have said, it is most likely the oil cooler. Pulling the head is going to lead to a bunch of broken plastic things on the back of the motor. Spend your time+money doing the motor mounts and replacing vacuum lines. For the exhaust studs, there is a GM part you can use to replace them with e-torx making the job a million times easier next time. Its also worth mentioning that if you haven't already, replace the fuel lines going to the rail. It was a factory recall in the 80s, and its probably time to replace what the dealer did back then. Check out larts' parts on ebay for the best hose kit.

You bought a special magnetic tool to remove spark plugs? I solved that problem on my BMW by purchasing a 12 inch section of hose. Once the spark plug has been loosened by the socket, I just stick the hose onto the end of the plug and lift it out. Ditto with installation. Think I spent 40 cents.

Failure of the oil cooler seals is very common in these cars as they age. Mine failed, oil pressure pushed lots of coolant out, engine overheated, and warped cam cover. Coolant milkshake was present.
