The LS2 408 stroker in Josh's Chevy Trailblazer SS has been fighting back for a long time but this time it's fixed. After a visit to the machine shop and a new crankshaft, the short block is reassembled and ready to be bolted together and installed. I bought a new tool for filling the cooling system and I think it's one of the best investments I've ever made. Of course it wasn't without issues (nothing is every that easy) but we got it done. It finally putting down good numbers on the dyno but you'll have to stay tuned to see those!

Wouldn't you want to pre-fill the intake line? Otherwise you're pulling the line's worth of air before you get any coolant from the jug.

Vacuum filling is usually used at factory to speed up the process in new cars.

Basic Trailblazers have aluminum inline 6's in them. I've heard lots of bad reports about the inline 6's. I guess the "SS" gives a V-8 made of cast iron. Should be a better solution Wouldn't it be cheaper to just buy a new short block with a new crankshaft in it?

Hey guys. What a great tool. I just don’t think it works for a Prius. You mentioned bleeding a Prius and it took forever. The only access to the system is through the reservoir tank. Mine holds 25 psi but doesn’t seem to pull the coolant out when I tried pulling the air out. I’m really confused. My Prius keeps heating up too much. I’d appreciate any insight into bleeding this thing. 🤦♂️

I bought a knock off of snap ons air lift system from China, it's a little jank but it fixed my Lincolns overheating problem from air bubbles, I tried using the bleeder valve so many damn times and it just never worked. Plus filling the system is so fast with this thing

If the shop screwed up, best of luck. Had a shop rebuild a boat block, and they milled the pistons to reduce compression - without asking. Their excuse: We read it on a bulletin from the mfr. Had another shop refresh a Saab 2.0T ecotec head with new intake valves, and the tech ended up swapping in a cobalt intake cam and trying to steal my Saab intake cam. Luckily I cut timing markings into the cams, and identified mine laying in a bin of parts the guy had previously bragged were for a cobalt race-build. Finding a good shop is not easy.

The best and easiest way to use the vacuum fill system is to find the total capacity of the cooling system then put that much in a bucket and draw from there. That saves having to switch bottles halfway through the job.

drill two 1/16" holes in the thermostat which allows all the air to bleed out of the block while filling. your radiator is filled the first time and no need for expensive equipment.

@grncoup There not working on a 32 ford. my 2 gen dodge ram 12 valve has an ecm but you could unplug it and start the engine and drive away. Nothing else would work. My 23 t bucket with a 460 ford does not have an ecm either. So HAH. LOL

You have to be real careful doing that the ecm on a late model car expects to see temp at a certain time drilling holes does bleed air but it slows the warm up. It could set codes

i had an 04 bonneville gxp, that car was a ton of fun! cruise in comfort, or pass everything on the road lol. had it up to 151mph (in mexico of course) once, and it was still feeling pretty stable. My friend/neighbor had an 06 Impala SS so of course we had to line them up. I did not win, lol. 0-100mph he pulled 2 car lengths. I did manage to walk a intake/pulley/exhaust/tune GTP sedan (not sure how, he shoulda gapped me). Wish i still had it, im sure its been abused like your GXP :(

A couple tips with the airlift tool. Get a 5 gallon bucket and dump your coolant in there, make sure you have plenty extra. Place the adapter in the radiator or surge tank without screwing it down, hook the air up and open the valve, then snug up the adapter. Most systems will pull down 25-27in. Let it sit for a minute to ensure the needle stays put, if it drops you have a leak, fix it before you dump coolant in. You are suppose to hook up the fill line and prime it, then vacuum it back down. But I have never had to do that. I wire tied two axle nuts to the end of the fill hose so it stays in the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket. Also having the bucket at or above the fill point helps. On some systems it will overfill/underfill so adjust as necessary obviously.

Not that it really matters, but vacuum is measured in inches, not psi. For example; Water boils at 58°f under 28 inches of vacuum. You measure vacuum by barometric pressure. 29" is roughly 1 bar or atmosphere 14.6959 psi. @sea level We pull -1 bar or almost 30" of vacuum to evacuate moisture and check for leaks. I'm sure you know by adding a little less than 15 lbs of boost you have doubled the volume. Therefore gaining a bar and ending up with two atmospheres. I'm sure you already knew all of this, but it is important for your novice viewers to learn the nomenclature. In automotive repair if you can't speak the language, you can count on Murphy's Law to eat your lunch. Well back at it, take care. if you want to use a just a fluid extractor (dont have access to a air pump) aSchwaben Coolant Vacuum Fill Tool works great I use it on older BMWs which have problems with air locks.

Those air lift systems the the best! I have the Maddox version from harbor freight and it’s awesome. No other way to fill cooling systems as far as I’m concerned.

Tip from someone who has used these, dump all your coolant into a 5 gallon bucket first, saves messing with swapping jugs. Also makes it real easy to blend if you aren't using 50/50 premix.

Feel your pain with the timing gear, my machine shop converted my gen 4 to a gen 3 with out telling me. Surprisingly they run without cam signal.

Vacuum filling of cooling systems is mandatory for certain cars. Besides this one with a venturi pump there are also cheaper sets available with a handpump which work quite good as well.

DISHEARTENING TO SEE THAT HAPPEN BUT IF MAN MAKES IT MAN CAN FIX IT YOU JUST HAVE TO GET IT TO THE RIGHT MAN. That's like my 2010 Ext Cab LWB Chev HD WT that has a Turbo 6.0 LTR 635HP Engine I use Daily. Looks like a Work Truck Sounds Like a Work Truck but it is not a Work Truck. Fastest I got it to was 164MPH on I-49 coming back home from Baton Rouge to Shreveport. It has 300k on the ODO, and the truck has no visible wear inside or outside. My external large Transmission Electric Cooler is a life saver. Trans runs 151 with a Camper on the back. Normal is 145F. My Son's Trailblazer SS I put in a 187.5 Thermostat if you can find one and that truck the numbers all look very good on the Screen. It reduced everything and it runs like a Grape Ape. I also put Severe Duty High Volume Fans on his SS Trail Blazer.
