With so many good options to drive, my 2012 Chevy Volt had been a little neglected lately. Years ago when I bought the car there were some discussions on the internet about tuning the car, and one picture of another one going 121MPH. I decided it was time to change that, with a few quick changes in HP Tuners we should be able to make the car quicker and faster. Now the top speed is only drag limited so if we had enough room or a tailwind it might break into the 123-125MPH range. Either way this should be the worlds fastest 1st generation Volt, at least for a little while.

Over 90,000 miles on my 2013 volt. Only problem we have ever had is the small 12 volt battery went bad. This prevented initial computer start up so Volt was unable to power up. Best most reliable car I have ever owned.

Any idea what would happen if the ICE tried to engage at that speed? Is the final drive tall enough to allow the 1.4L to run at that speed (if it was coupled with the final drive like it does over 70mph)?

My brother has a Chevy Volt. On Mountain mode he's able to charge his batteries but not to 100%. Can you change the parameters so you can charge to 100% while you're driving then watch your engine shut off and the motor take you another 40 50 60 miles whatever before the engine kicks back.

The 2nd gen can do a mid 7 second 0-60 stock, but both generations feel much quicker than they are. Shame a lot of people seemed to think this was a GM-made Prius, 294 ft/lb of torque is not at all like a Prius!

I don't know how your Volt was so slow to begin with. According to specs it's 8.6 seconds to 60. This quote is from Motor Trend for the 2011 Volt, "The 60-mph dash happens in 8.8 seconds on full electric power, 8.7 with the engine on." I would think if you improved on the stock setup, you should at least be down in the 7 second range...

Wonder how much more you could get out of my dad's 2016 Volt. That thing pulls like a freight train until about 65, at which point the torque is gone. Motor Trend says the stock one will do 0-60 in 7.1

Not even close to the current known Volt top speed world record of 148 MPH. Its a bit more involved than simply increasing the ECU speed limiter and tweaking some torque but still can be done in HP tuners apparently.

GDI intake cleaner? But why on earth would you do that? Your Volt's ICE engine is port injected, not direct injection. You know that, right? Looks like you got upsold by the dealer... makes me question your judgement. My 2018 Volts 1.5 liter has Direct Injection but the 1.4 in the 2011-2015 does not. My 2018 is also limited to 101 MPH, but truth be told it really doesnt need to go any faster than that. The handling and brakes on a stock volt just aren't where they need to be for doing 120+. For reference, ive timed my 2018 Volt 0-60 with a Dragy @ 7.5 second 0-60 and its very repeatable. Quarter mile in 15.32 seconds. Ive been told the Gen 2 volts have a lot less torque management, they will very easily burn rubber. You can stack the output of the ICE and EV motors, ive seen some post referencing this. Theres a photo floating around out there of someone having their volt up to 148 mph. I think only one guy has done this though. The Cadillac ELR does a bit of this to get a higher factory rated HP number and higher speed limiter. 121 MPH is most certainly not the record.

The Volt will remind one pretty quickly in corners that it's a family sedan, though. :( A two-door that was 'bout 300 lbs lighter would have been nice, though I expect not exactly a hot seller.

If I never see another Volt it will be too soon. I think the smug look on the drivers face is because they think they're saving the world. Or is it because they and GM pulled a fast one on all of us. The final subsidy per car turned out to be over $200,000. Just like recycling garbage, if it's not economically feasible, IT'S NOT FEASIBLE. The GM execs are laughing all the way to the bank, after stuffing all that government money in their pockets, and the jokes on us, the American taxpayer.

Have you ever driven one - just curious. Most studies I've read put the average production cost for all Volts ever produced at $75-$80K. Maybe the first 2011 models off the line were $200K (I think you'll find similar high costs of production for the first gen Prius and Insight models). Do you think Toyota lost money on every Prius they sold over the last 23 years? Sometimes government has to prime the pump for superior technologies to evolve domestically (and save jobs). The problem with the Volt - GM never capitalized on the R&D they (and tax payers) put into the car. They never marketed the car right as an EV, and by 2016, they knew subsidies were going away and competitors were catching up with cheaper alternatives - they gave up on the PHEV market. It could have led to a line of reasonably priced derivatives with battery costs coming down (and becoming much less toxic to produce). A lighter 2-door coupe & convertible, small AWD SUV, small mini-van, even a small pickup (like the VW Caddy from the 70s) but it turned out to be a throw-away project, EXCEPT FOR what they were able to learn to build the Bolt and their new skateboard architecture. Don't worry Bill - thanks to GM's Chinese EV sales, the GM stock in your 401K will let you retire nicely driving a Silverado 2500 HD into the sunset :)

When I saw "fastest" I thought you'd be taking weight out (back seat, etc.), tuning the suspension to take higher speeds, maybe upgrading something. Still cool a stock Volt hits 123. I love my 2nd gen Volt.

I stumbled across your video. I said "hey, he's doing it too". That guy who had his daughter get a photo of a Volt at 121mph was ME. We actually hit 122 before I backed off. Please know that the crazy throttle mapping of the tune makes the car was more or less undriveable. The car was no quicker, it just went crazy with small throttle inputs. But the speed limiter was definitely turned off. I quickly went back to the stock tune. My favorite doubter comment was the speedo was set for kilometers, made me laugh. The whole project was fun, yes, it can be done!

It’s the best of both worlds in my opinion. Especially if you only want to have one vehicle. All electric for your commute/daily driving. For weekend or road trips any local gas station can provide 300+ miles of additional range in less than 5 minutes at the pump!

Yes, it’s technically both. You can drive full electric and as fast as you want until the battery is depleted. After that it turns into more of a traditional hybrid.

It's now out of warranty. It has as speed limiter and only let's you go so fast. So, let's see if we can break it by modifying it so we can go over that limit.
